Gazing at a memory
I lift the coarse paper
cup to my tentative lips
and pour the searing coffee down
my sand paper throat
sore from harsh
words left unspoken
The liquid scalds
my tongue burning
away the feel of
yours and I
gulp it down
smothering
your sweet flavor
with bitter tastes of
caffeinated comfort
I lean my head back
against cold brick and
close my bloodshot eyes but
I'm still staring
at a memory I wish
didn't exist
